**How to Solve DI (Bar Chart) Questions in SSC CGL Exam**

What you need to clear in Government exams are **speed and accuracy**. Now when you are reading this article, it is fairly safe to assume that you want to improve speed to solve those Data Interpretation questions that take quite a bigger slice of your time. It is the most scoring as well as a more time-consuming section of exams. Data Interpretation is all about skill, speed, and accuracy. DI needs a lot of practice but it is also important from where you should practice. Together with all our experience as mentors and the feedback received from a number of students, we are sharing some tips to boost your speed and accuracy. In this article, we assume that you are just starting your preparation. We will also share one example to solve the questions.

**Level of Questions: **

Before starting preparation for any competitive exam, you should first see the types of questions that were asked in previous years. We have a good repository of those or you can also try a free mock test to get yourself acquainted with the types and level of questions. When you compare the DI questions in SSC CGL exam with the banking examinations like IBPS or RBI or even with Insurance Examinations, the level is low. However, it is important to get the question right in little time. And since every “DI” problem is comprised of 4-5 linked questions, you will get all correct answers in very less time.

**Where to Start:**

Start from the basic mathematics. Do not just jump to mocks or start solving a random chapter and demoralize yourself. Revisit to your school days and **learn tables**. You should know all the tables till 30 by heart. **Learn squares till 30, cubes till 20 and square roots till 10**. You should learn major fraction like 1/8 in terms of percentage till 20.

**The Next Step- Clear Your Basics:**

Now when you have seen the previous year questions and you know the level of difficulty of the exam, start chapter by chapter and go slow, take your time and clear your fundamentals. Then after learning the concept, solve various types of problems. Set a target time and solve. Think what shortcuts you can apply to the questions. It is very important to clear the basics before using techniques or shortcuts.

**Ratio and Percentage, Averages Chapters holds the key: **

50% is 1/2, 25% is 1/4, 12.5 % is 1/8, 6.25% is 1/16 and so on. Revisit the Ratio and Percentages chapter and make sure you know all these fractions by heart. The DI can’t be solved quickly if you are slow in calculations or don’t know the fractions. It is therefore very important to work on improving your calculations by learning tables, squares, cubes, square roots, and fractions.

**Getting Better: **

After you are well averse with the basics and have grasped the squares and tables, this is time to polish yourself. Start practicing and solving. It is imperative to improve both speed and accuracy. In our opinion, work on accuracy first and practice more to improve speed later. Start attempting mock tests and analyze your performance. In the DI questions, almost everything like averages, fractions, percentage, mean etc. are used. It is advisable if you learn some approximating techniques that will help you in eliminating the option.

Make a habit of using a stop-watch whenever solving quant. Take tests for actual exam durations of quants like 35 minutes, 25 minutes etc. and try and solve as many questions as you can.

**About Bar Charts:**

Any chart e.g. Pie Chart, Bar Chart is a pictorial representation of data which gives you a bird-eye of the data. Seeing the graph you may get the trend of the data, if it is increasing, decreasing, constant or moving haphazardly. A bar chart looks like this:

- Understand clearly what is on X-Axis and what is on Y Axis
- Understand the units, sometimes it is written that all the figures are in Lakhs, solve the corresponding questions accordingly
- The length of the bars represent the numbers

**Which Questions to Attempt in DI (Bar Graph):**

It generally happens that you have limited time to solve the DI questions. Let’s say you have 60 seconds to solve 5 DI questions. Therefore, it is important that you pick the right question to solve. The data given in the Numbers in the DI set will tell you roughly which one is going to take more time to solve.

- For Example, the question that involves the figures of 55, 124, 280 will take less time in calculations than the one which contains figures of 32245, 84457, 36614 etc.
- Also, glance at all the options given. Sometimes it is easier to eliminate.
- Sometimes in SSC, one question is asked which does not involve any calculation at all, i.e. questions like in which year the quantity was the highest. Attempt those first.

**While Attempting the Exam:**

Question-solving involves four basic steps. Reading, understanding, picking up the right method to solve the sum and calculating. You need to get all these right to get the answer quickly. Attempting exam is an art. As already discussed, **While reading the question, make sure to read options as well** and see how you can use it to solve the sum. Sometimes there are questions which are very difficult and will consume most of your time. You need to know which ones to skip and which ones to attempt. Some questions can be solved without using pen and paper.

**Things You Need to Avoid**

- Avoid using calculators and start doing calculations in your mind. Keep practicing the short-tricks and learn how to apply them. Start doing approximations.
- When you are practicing, avoid using a pen while solving Mathematics problems. Try and solve the sums orally. This will not only sharpen your mind but will also help you to have a better understanding of the problem. If you are not able to solve it orally, start using pen and paper.
- While attempting mocks, do not overlook the ones that you got right. There may be a short method to solve the same question. Keep a note of that and start using it.
- Do not rush, read properly and see what is asked in the question and see if there is any short-cut or trick available.
- Do not waste a lot of time in calculations. Skip the lengthier questions since each question carries equal mark.

The bar graph above shows the total number of students in six sections of class 8th of a school. Answer the following:

- What’s the ratio of number of students in class A and C to that of students in C and D?

- 1:1
- 1:2
- 2:1
- 3:4
- 4:3

Solution:

- Student in class A = 100
- Student in class C = 80
- Student in class A+C = 180
- Student in class C = 80
- Student in class D = 60
- Student in class C+D = 140

∴ Ratio = 180 / 140

- 9:7
